There are few places that stir the thoughts of paradise like Hawaii. With its beautiful beaches, lush vegetation and amazing culture it’s easy to understand why. On the Island of Oahu, However, there may be something strange lurking along the dark and twisting roads of Mt. Tantalus. Our next tale is sourced from Reddit user shadeshadows.
“I was born and raised in Hawaii on the Island of Oahu. I used to deliver pizzas for some extra cash during college a little over a decade ago, and after closing shifts on weekends, my coworkers and I sometimes just drove around the island until sunrise. We’d tell stories and just talk for most of the night as we drove around.
There is a mountain named Tantalus that is famous for its twisty road, woods, hikes, and nice views. We’d sometimes drive up there to get nice nighttime views of the city. The road was pretty dark and creepy in some areas, but we liked that sort of thing. We’d tell some scary stories sometimes as we drove on the mountain to freak each other out.

One night, we were driving back down on the twisty road, and I was the driver on this particular night. After turning a dark corner, I saw something crossing the road and slammed my brakes. It looked like a small wild pig, which we have a lot of (they are actually a problem, as they cause a lot of erosion). It had a fat body and a curly tail.
However, as it trotted quickly across the road, illuminated by the glow of my headlights, it turned its head toward the car for a second just before it disappeared into the dense woods just past the small guardrail on the side of the road. Although its body was that of a pig, its face was…something else. Its nose was flat; it didn’t have a snout. In fact, it appeared to have distinct *human* features. My friend in the front passenger seat and I only saw its face for a brief moment before it disappeared into the darkness, but we both confirmed that we saw a human face on that “pig.” I’m not talking about some weird deformity. I mean, it had human eyes, a human nose, and human lips. I laid on the gas pedal and got back to the main, well-lit streets as soon as possible after that. Recalling this memory and typing it out, I still get major goosebumps, or “chicken skin,” as we like to say in Hawaii.“
A disturbing thought to say the least. Could there be a strange mutant or deformed pig roaming the dark mountain passes outside of Honolulu? I dare ask however, could it be more? Something about the users submission reminded me of some Hawaiian folklore I had heard some years back from a friend. I submit to you the Legend of Kamapua’a a demigod in said to be able to shift forms from anything to a giant man with the head of a boar…to a small pig with the face of a man.
Whatever it is stalking the roads of Mt. Tantalus, be it a strange deformed piglet or perhaps an ancient spirit of the island, remains a mystery.
Keep it creepy kiddos,
